Henry David Thoreau, who traveled across Moosehead Lake by steamer and canoe in 1857, described it as " a suitably wild looking sheet of water, sprinkled with small, low islands . . . covered with shaggy spruce and other wild wood". It looks much the same today. The largest lake east of the Mississippi, Moosehead is some 40 miles long and up to twenty miles wide, with 350 miles of shoreline. At it’s deepest point, the spot where the flinty blue-green face of Mount Kineo plunges precipitously to the water, the lake is 250 feet deep. Moosehead was already famous among sportsmen by the end of the nineteenth century for the size of its lake trout and salmon, and the forests were renowned for their deer and moose. Vacation trains brought the rich and famous all the way from New York City to the famed Kineo House Hotel at Mount Kineo, where they rested and recreated in high style. In the decades since, the changes have been more of degree than of kind. Recreation and forestry continue to be the major industries, although these days vacationers are as apt to visit in the winter for skiing and snowmobiling as in the summer for boating, fishing and hiking.
